There's a particular kind of chaos that happens to baby drawers somewhere between newborn and toddlerhood — outgrown footies wedged next to summer rompers, single socks with no match, and somehow never enough of whatever size actually fits right now. Fall is one of the best times to reset, since it usually lines up with a size change anyway. Here's how we stock (and re-stock) drawers in our own house, room by room.
Start With a Real Purge, Not a Tidy-Up
Before anything new goes in, everything comes out. Sort into three piles: still fits, almost outgrown (keep in a bin for the next few weeks), and done. Pajamas and footies especially tend to run tight at the shoulders and feet long before they look "too small" on a hanger, so check for snug cuffs and pulled seams rather than judging by eye.
The Fall Drawer Essentials
- 2–3 long sleeve bases. A snug, stretchy long sleeve set is the workhorse of a fall wardrobe — layer under a sweater during the day, wear alone at night.
- 4–5 pajama sets in a fabric that breathes. Fall nights swing in temperature more than any other season, so a natural fiber that regulates heat (we're partial to bamboo) means fewer 2 a.m. changes when your baby runs warm one night and cool the next.
- A couple of footed options. Once socks start disappearing into the void, footies solve the problem entirely — no loose socks to kick off overnight.
- Fold-over mittens on anything newborn to young infant. Small hands scratch, and fall skin gets drier. Built-in cuffs save you from hunting for separate mittens at 3 a.m.
- One size up in the back of the drawer. Growth spurts don't wait for laundry day. Keeping the next size folded and ready means you're never caught without something that fits.
Organize for 2 a.m. You, Not Daytime You
The person who actually opens this drawer most often is you, half-asleep, at a diaper change. Fold pajamas so the front is visible at a glance, group by size instead of style, and keep a designated "sick day" set at the very front — something with easy front zips that won't require gymnastics over a sleeping baby.
Buying in Sets Instead of One-Offs
One of the easiest ways to fully stock a drawer in one go — instead of slowly collecting single pieces over months — is to buy a few coordinating pieces at once. It's how we approach our own bundles: pick your sizes and colors, and you walk away with a genuinely stocked drawer instead of three more single pajamas that don't quite add up to a full rotation.
